About Me
Seven years ago, I was a rising 4th grader. My parents sat me down (the day before school started) to tell me that I would attend a school for students with dyslexia. Starting tomorrow. I cried - petrified of what stood before me. And then I dove in. I have never looked back.
Greatest gift. Having persevered through the challenges inherent in becoming a proficient reader, my lens — how I perceive others — has morphed. I have developed a deep appreciation for those with differences. It could be a physical deformity or an invisible struggle to pay attention, live a healthier life, or engage in a social conversation. Having opened my eyes, I see these people all around me. And they light up the room. I have since spent meaningful time working and caring for persons with disabilities, deeply immersing myself in understanding their specialness, their rights, and how to help them advocate for what they need.
The Shoes We Wear is a glimpse into these extraordinary people and those who support them – and the wonder, inspiration, and joy they gift to others every day.
About This Blog
I started this blog in August 2023 after spending my summer with Tommy (his real name is kept anonymous), a 40-year-old gentleman with Down Syndrome. I was assigned to be his counselor at the oldest sleep-away camp for persons with disabilities in the United States. Tommy embraced me with welcoming eyes and a bear hug and told me straight up, “We are going to be best friends.” And we were. This blog is dedicated to him.
My posts will celebrate people with differences and the incredible folks who love, support, and advocate for them. In addition, I will explore current events and scholarly publications related to topics of disability justice. Posts are updated monthly, and I can be reached via email here!
